For the longest time in the US, we have benefited from low energy costs, but times are changing. Raising energy prices along with an increase in social consciousness, has forced many of us to rethink traditional means of cooling and heating and turn to alternative solutions.

Heat Pump Chillers to the Rescue!

Continental offers Air-to-Water (models HPAR) and Water-to-Water (models HPWR) heat pump chillers in the 40 to 200 ton range.

Models HPAR offer high efficiency in both cooling and heating modes, due to the fact that the heat transfer surfaces are generously sized.

Part load performance is automatically controlled between 100% to 25%, and all values in between – to match the load.

Models HPAR use outside ambient to provide hot water. In most cases, the limiting factor is the outside ambient. The practical design ambient temperature is 35° F.  Below 35° F, one option is to have factory supplied supplemental heat or a backup HPAR system that will defrost while the main system is heating.

Water-to-Water models HPWR use ground water and are very efficient to cool and heat. The cooling energy –efficiency of models HPWR is 20-24 EER, compared to an EER of 10-12 for a conventional chiller. Likewise, in heating mode, HPWR has a COP of 3 to 4, which means for every kW of electrical input, the output is 3 to 4 times, compared to a commercial boiler which is 0.7 to 0.8.
